Bunch o' Nuns!

Within this group of pious ladies from the SCA kingdom of Atlantia you will find Christina Thickpenny of Giggleswick, Lady Louise de la Mare, Mistress Jessamyn di Piemonte, Dame Gwenllian ferch Maredudd, and, in front, Lady Kilmeney Jokelsdottir (the leper). Even though their garb is based on 15th century habits, not much changed in religious fashions over the next hundred years, so I believe these gowns could easily be of interest to 16th century costumers as well. But really, I just think they look so cute, and I am totally impressed with their creativity and sense of humor! Below you can read the description that Mistress Jessamyn posted on the Yahoo SCA-garb list, where I was lucky enough to discover this great picture.

bunch o' nuns

Just thought that y'all might get a kick out of this. We knew we were going to be bored at Crown (like we want to watch fighting...) so we all decided to go as Swedish Brigettine nuns.

The habit is from a wall mural in Upland, c. 1450. Because of the stripe on the outermost veil, we affectionately call ourselves the "skunk nuns." By the way, the young nun in front is covered up because she has leprosy. If her father hadn't had sooo much money, we never would have taken her into the convent, but what can you do?

Our motto? The good Lord wanted us to live in piety- not penury!
