Susie Skibo

I love costumers who make good middle-class costumes, and Susie's gown based on the fashions of an English town woman is a real knockout! Although the gown itself is fairly simple, all that rich black velveteen and her choice of accessories creates a really elegant and authentic look. You can see more of her work on this webpage (you might also recognize her daughter Erin, whose dress was featured on this site last year), and you can read more about this gorgeous costume below the picture. If you have any questions or comments for Susie, you can email her at sue_lou01(at)yahoo.com.

Susie

This is one of my favorite gowns I have ever done. It is based on a 1570 sketch by Lucas de Heere of English Town women. The pattern is actually a Butterick Retro pattern for an overcoat (#6758). I changed the style of the collar, elongated the gores and adjusted the fit. The gown is made of black velveteen. The sleeves are embellished with black grosgrain and gold trim placed cheveron wise. Black braid runs around the standing collar and on either front edge of the gown. It closes in the front with hooks and eyes. I wear the gown with a small hoop and can dress it up or down depending on which underskirt and accessories I choose. My tall hat is made of the same black velveteen over a plastic canvas base. The jewelry was purchased on line from various shops. My fan - which is facing backwords in the picture - is made of ostrich feathers placed over an old fan that I had. My Wenches Guild pin is worn on my handkerchief along with any other favors.
