Alsatian Man's Costume
I have to admit that I know next to nothing about Alsace or the fashions from that area. Mike just saw this illustration in Vecellio's Degli Habiti antichi et moderni and liked that it was something different than the the standard late 16th c. menswear. I got about 80% finished with this costume 3 years ago, but stalled out on the leather jerkin. My sewing machine DOES NOT LIKE LEATHER! But Mike nagged me enough that I finally drug it out again and pushed on through. I made a few changes and simplifications along the way, but Mike is just thrilled to have something new to wear to faire, so it's all good.
Most of it is pretty straightforward boy-clothes, but I'm proud of the thread covered buttons that I made for the doublet, and the hat, which I refashioned from a wool pilgrim hat.
