Pseudo-ScottishOne of the faires that we regularly attend is Scarborough Faire, which has a very Scottish feel to it, and everywhere you look you can find men in kilts. Mmmmm... lovely! :-) I eventually talked my Irish-Polish man into dressing up like a Scott, and I think he looked really great! His kilt is a hand pleated great kilt made out of 9 yards of plaid that I picked up on sale in the middle of the summer. I learned how to make this type of kilt from some very good instructions found here. The kilt itself might be passibly authentic for the 17th or 18th centuries, but I'd need to work on the rest of the outfit if I wanted to make it a real historical garment. My outfit is a slightly upgraded version of the typical Renaissance faire wench look: two skirts, one hitched
up in the front, bodice, poofy shirt, and floppy velvet hat. However, there are a few elements pulled
from more authentic attire, like the bodice worn over an Elizabethan corset and the cartridge
pleating on the skirt. Although you can't see it well in these pictures, I also have a plaid shawl draped
from my shoulder to hip, which is enough to make me feel like quite the bonny Scottish lass!
