1480's Florentine Gown
This gown was inspired by the portraits of Florentine women from the last quarter of the 15th century.
The gamurra was a simple gown meant to convey modesty, and it was usually worn at home or with an
overgown in public. However, a cotta was a summer garment similar to the gamurra, but
it was made of silk and could be worn as an outer garment even at formal events.
My dress is reversible with red silk on one side and plum wool on the other, so it might fit both of these
categories. I also made two sets of reversible sleeves to go with the gown so that I can create a wide
variety of looks with one outfit. I also plan to eventually make an overgown to wear with this outfit,
but I'm still hunting for the perfect fabric to use.
You can read more about this project in my diary
and see examples of Florentine dress in artwork in my research
gallery.
